Hyundai has unveiled the IONIQ 5, an electric midsize SUV, at a virtual world premiere. As the first IONIQ sub-brand dedicated to electric vehicles (BEVs), the IONIQ 5 sets new standards in electromobility.

Hyundai IONIK 5

The IONIQ 5 is built on Hyundai's custom Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which gives it unique proportions with a longer wheelbase, innovative interior, and high performance combined with ultra-fast charging capability and a car. -Load (V2L) as well as enhanced connectivity and driver assistance.

“IONIQ 5 adapts to an uncompromising lifestyle by proactively taking care of the needs of customers while on the road. It is the first electric vehicle to offer a new driving experience through innovative interior space and cutting-edge technology.” Thomas Shemera, Hyundai's executive vice president and director of global marketing, said.

Heralds a new era in electric vehicle design

The progressive design of the IONIQ 5 sets itself apart from previous standards, opening up new design freedom. It is reminiscent of the bold silhouette of the Hyundai Pony, Hyundai's first car. IONIQ 5 symbolizes Hyundai's 45 years of presence in the lives of customers and connects past, present and future. The unique exterior design is inspired by the Pony profile which has been adapted to a 3000mm wheelbase.

For the first time in a Hyundai, the hood overlaps the fenders to minimize the distance between the panels and ensure optimal aerodynamics. The V-shaped front bumper with characteristic daytime running lights creates a unique lighting image. Small pixel lights are also used in the rear of the car.

On the sides, auto-retractable door handles provide a sleek surface finish and increased aerodynamic efficiency. The massive C-pillar, inspired by the Hyundai 45 electric car concept, gives the IONIQ 5 an impressive appearance that is easily recognizable from afar.

The aerodynamically optimized wheels also feature Parametric Pixel styling and are available with larger 20-inch wheels. These are the largest wheels ever fitted to an electric Hyundai and complement the excellent proportions of the IONIQ 5.

“A new mobility experience for the next generation has been a mission since day one when we started this project. IONIQ 5 is a new definition of timelessness, a thread that connects our past to the present and future.” Said SangYup Lee, senior vice president and head of Hyundai's global design center.

The Living Space theme is evident throughout the interior. In particular, this manifests itself through the universal island, the movable center console, which can be retracted by 140 mm. The versatile island, together with the flat floor under which the batteries are housed, allows greater freedom of movement inside the vehicle.

The IONIQ 5 was also equipped with electronically controlled front seats. The seats recline at an optimal angle, giving the passenger a sense of weightlessness. Hyundai has reduced the thickness of the front seats by 30 percent, providing more space for second-row passengers.

Many interior elements - seats, headliner, door trim, floor and armrest - are made from sustainable materials, including recycled PET bottles, vegetable and natural wool yarn, eco-leather and bio-dye with plant extracts.

Buyers can choose from nine exterior colors, including five nature-inspired colors exclusive to the IONIQ 5. The interior is available in three color options.

A range of electric actuators for everyone

The IONIQ 5 is available with a range of different Electric Actuators (PE) to meet any customer's mobility needs without sacrificing performance. Customers can choose from two battery options, 58kWh or 72.6kWh, and two electric motor systems: a base rear motor or an optional front and rear motor. All variants offer excellent range and a top speed of 185 km/h.

At the top of the range of electric motors is the optional all-wheel drive (AWD) paired with a 72.6 kWh battery pack for a total output of 225 kWh and 605 Nm of torque. This version can accelerate from 0 km/h to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

For the all-wheel drive (2WD) version with a 72.6 kWh battery, the range of the IONIQ 5 on a single charge will be approximately 470-480 km on the WLTP cycle.

Ultra-fast battery charging with innovative vehicle-to-load (V2L) function

The E-GMP platform can support both 400V and 800V charging infrastructure. The platform offers standard 800V charging with 400V charging without the need for additional components or adapters. It is the world's first patented technology that uses a motor and an inverter to increase the voltage from 400V to 800V to ensure stable charging.

With a 350 kW charger, the IONIQ 5 can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. Just five minutes of charging is enough to replenish the energy reserve sufficient for a distance of 100 km.

IONIQ 5 also supports an active lifestyle in terms of electric mobility with the innovative V2L feature, which allows customers to freely use or charge any electric device, such as electric bikes, scooters or camping equipment, on the move or stationary.

The V2L function can provide power up to 3.6 kW. The V2L port is located under the second row seats and can be used when the vehicle is on. The second V2L port is located in the charging port on the outside of the vehicle. With the converter, customers can charge high power electrical equipment. The external port provides power even when the car is turned off.

Innovative connectivity and driver assistance for safety and comfort

IONIQ 5 seamlessly integrates advanced technologies to enhance the digital user experience. The wide, customizable double cockpit includes a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster.

For the first time on a Hyundai, the IONIQ 5 features an augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD) that actually turns the windshield into a display screen. IONIQ 5 is also equipped with Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems that provide the highest levels of safety and comfort on the road. The IONIQ 5 is the first Hyundai model to offer Level 2 Highway Driving Assistant (HDA 2). Other driving assistance systems include Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA), Blind Spot Assist (BCA), Intelligent Speed Limiter (ISLA), Driver Attention Assist (DAW), High Beam Assist (HBA) and other.

IONIQ 5 will be available in select regions from the first half of 2021.
