Mazda chose to use a rotary engine to power the generator, taking advantage of the unique ability of the Wankel engine to produce the required power with a small drive. The newly developed 8C rotary engine is located under the hood next to the generator and powerful electric motor. This compact electric powertrain, combined with a 17.8kW Li-Ion battery and a 50-litre petrol tank, creates a unique off-the-shelf plug-in hybrid system with a very competitive overall range.

The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV also offers solutions for active drivers with features such as 2- or 3-phase AC charging and DC fast charging, a 1500-watt W socket and three driving modes for different driving situations: Normal, EV and Charge. Plus, with a powerful 125kW electric motor, it delivers even slightly better performance than the all-electric Mazda MX-30.

The model presented at the Brussels Motor Show is called the Edition R. – a version that will be available on the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV. The Edition R design features Maroon Rouge Metallic, nodding to the roof color of Mazda's first passenger car, the R360 Coupe, as a unique and distinctive Mazda color that highlights the pillars and roof edges. The rest of the exterior and interior of the car are finished in black. The Edition R also features styling cues such as the Rotor Rotor emblem (a distinctive triangular shape with slightly rounded sides) embossed on the front headrests and adorning the floor mats.

Mazda dealers in Russia will begin accepting orders for the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV on Monday, January 16th. Prices for a car in a richly equipped Prime-Line version start at $161,100.
