The new BMW X2 xDrive25e will hit the market in July 2020. In addition to the forward-looking drive technology, the plug-in hybrid model will also feature a host of new design and equipment features that will also enhance traditional variants of the Sports Activity Coupé compact sports coupe. The new design of the front without fog lamps emphasizes the sporty character of the model. LED headlights with integrated warning lights improve visibility in adverse weather conditions.

The design of the new BMW X2

With the stylish design of the new BMW X2 and sporty driving characteristics, the BMW X2 meets the demands of today's urban target groups better than ever. The broad portfolio of powertrains, now further expanded with plug-in hybrids, is the result of the BMW Group's Power Of Choice strategy to meet the diverse needs of customers in the global automotive markets. The range ranges from particularly efficient entry-level models with petrol and diesel engines and the new plug-in hybrid model to the extremely sporty top model BMW X2 M35i with a maximum output of 225 kW (306 hp).

Consistent continuation of the electrification strategy

Since the introduction of the first SAC vehicle with a plug-in hybrid drive, the BMW Group has consistently pursued its electrification strategy. As with other vehicle classes, there is an ever-increasing variety of electric models in the premium compact segment. The new BMW X2 xDrive25e is the little brother of the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) with the designation BMW X1 xDrive25e and the spacious and versatile BMW 225xe Active Tourer. Another plug-in compact hybrid model is the MINI Cooper SE Countryman ALL4.

Fresh touches for the BMW X2

The new BMW X2 xDrive25e debuts with fresh design accents and eye-catching equipment features that will also be available for all other Sports Activity Coupé compact sports coupe variants alongside the plug-in hybrid model launched on the market. The most striking novelty is the redesigned front end. Smooth, sculpted surfaces give the car a particularly sporty look, especially in the M Sport and M Sport X models. Bad weather lights integrated into the standard LED headlights replace the former round fog lights. Design elements in high-gloss black enhance the look of the front even in the standard version. The high-gloss black trim on the lower air intake further enhances the sporty and elegant look of the compact SAC.

In adverse weather and visibility conditions, the new weatherproof lights provide optimal illumination of the side sections of the road by specifically switching on the cornering lights. In addition, the range of optional equipment for the BMW X2 will be expanded. The Business package will soon also include a real-time traffic information service. The exterior paint selection will be expanded to include Phytonic Blue metallic.

More driving pleasure and efficiency thanks to the latest BMW eDrive technology

The intelligent management of the interaction between the three-cylinder petrol engine and the electric motor not only gives the new BMW X2 xDrive25e exemplary efficiency, but also ensures brand-specific driving pleasure. Both the synchronous motor and the high-voltage battery that powers it are from the latest fourth generation of BMW eDrive technology developed by the BMW Group for plug-in hybrid models. The electric motor develops 70 kW (95 hp) and 165 Nm of torque and sends its torque to the rear wheels via a single-speed gearbox. The 1.5-litre internal combustion engine develops a maximum output of 92 kW (125 hp) and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. Its power is sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed Steptronic transmission. The resulting hybrid all-wheel drive gives the new BMW X2 xDrive25e a cornering agility that is unique in the competitive environment. The fast and precise adaptation of the front and rear wheel drive to the current driving situation in all weather and road conditions also ensures the highest level of traction and stability.

Both engines generate a total hybrid system output of 162 kW (220 hp). The maximum torque of the dual drive system is 385 Nm. When starting off and accelerating, the spontaneous increase in power and the immediately available maximum torque of the electric motor ensure a particularly dynamic response to the accelerator pedal. The new BMW X2 xDrive25e accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. The electric powertrain assist contributes to particularly dynamic acceleration, also when driving and overtaking. The top speed of the new BMW X2 xDrive25e is 195 km/h.

Over long distances, the electric motor improves transmission efficiency by supporting the internal combustion engine based on its operating point.

The latest battery technology extends the electric range.

The energy for the electric drive is stored in a lithium-ion battery. Thanks to the use of the latest battery cell technology, this high-voltage energy storage unit has a particularly high energy density. A total energy content of 10.0 kWh helps the new BMW X2 xDrive25e achieve an all-electric range of up to

57 kilometers in the official EU driving cycle. This allows most of the daily vehicular traffic, for example between the place of residence and place of work, to be carried out exclusively on the electric drive, i.e. locally emission-free.

In addition, BMW Charging also offers the BMW i Wallbox for particularly fast, convenient and efficient charging of your vehicle at home. The BMW Charging Card gives you access to over 320,000 public charging stations worldwide.

A fully discharged high-voltage battery can be fully charged (100 %) from a household outlet in about 5 hours. After just 3.8 hours, the charge level is 80%. With the BMW i Wallbox, charging from 0 to 100 % takes about 3.2 hours, and in just 2.4 hours the battery is charged to 80 %.

Intelligent drive control and three operating modes

Plug-in intelligent hybrid control not only guarantees demand-driven power to the front and rear wheels, but also efficient interaction between combustion engines and electric motors. It is even possible to use navigation data to adapt traffic management to the route profile and thus increase the share of purely electric driving in built-up areas. In addition, the driver can select their preferred hybrid driving mode using the eDrive button on the center console. As an alternative to the standard AUTO eDRIVE mode, MAX eDrive mode can be selected, in which the new BMW X2 xDrive25e runs entirely on electricity with a top speed of 135 km/h. In turn, the SAVE BATTERY mode offers the possibility to maintain a constant charge level of the high-voltage battery while driving or to increase it through recuperation. As a result, the energy stored in the battery can later be used for purely electric driving, for example in urban areas.

Thanks to its long electric range and low CO2 emissions, the new BMW X2 xDrive25e in Germany meets the criteria for the designation of an electric vehicle set out in the German Electric Vehicle Act and the corresponding special permits for driving on public roads. In addition, the plug-in hybrid model is subject to a reduced company vehicle tax. For private use, only half of the gross list price is considered income.

Universal standard equipment for a specific model

Thanks to the compact location of the high-voltage battery under the rear seat, the boot space is only slightly reduced compared to conventionally driven variants of the BMW X2. In the most frequently used area, the size of the load compartment has remained unchanged. The plug-in hybrid model has a versatile interior. By folding down the standard 40:20:40 split rear seatback, the boot volume can be increased from 410 to 1,290 litres.

The body structure and chassis tuning have been precisely matched to the axle weight distribution characteristic of the new BMW X2 xDrive25e. To optimize aerodynamics, the adaptation of suspension and damping systems goes hand in hand with lowering the suspension by 10 millimeters compared to conventional engine variants.

The standard equipment of the new BMW X2 xDrive25e includes acoustic pedestrian warning, 17-inch alloy wheels, 2-zone automatic air conditioning as well as auxiliary air conditioning, which can also be controlled remotely via smartphone using BMW Connected. application. Hybrid-specific readings on the on-board monitor provide information on, among other things, energy flow, current and past fuel and energy consumption, and the share of electric and combustion engines in the vehicle's total thrust. The new BMW X2 xDrive25e is available in Advantage, Advantage Plus, M Sport and M Sport X designs.
