Ford Performance today announced its plans to enter electric sports with the introduction of the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, a predatory transformation of the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 that holds previous NHRA competition world records. The goal of the new car is to beat the Cobra Jet 1400 electric car record by a quarter mile.8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph (276.76 km/h).

Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 ready to break NHRA world records in electric vehicle category

In June 2021, a Cobra Jet 1400 was installed by Bob Taska III at a competition in Norwalk, Ohio. Originally built in collaboration with Ford Performance, MLe Racecars, AEM-EV, Cascadia Motion and Watson Engineering, the car was ready for the next challenge.

The team led by Ford Performance went back to the drawing board and put a lot of effort into adjustments and improvements to the chassis, transmission and control systems. To underscore the importance of this work, Ford Performance reintroduced the famous Super Cobra Jet name, first used on 1969 Mustang models, where it was used to refer to enhancements to the standard Cobra Jet package.

“We are constantly trying to put pressure on every aspect of the motorsports world,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports. Drag racing continues to be an important testing ground for our products and technologies, so we are excited not only to try to break our own quarter mile record, but also to showcase our developments across the full range of electric vehicles.”

Similar power supply but improved solutions

Using the Super Cobra Jet 1800 the same four PN-250-DZR converters connected to two pairs of DS-250-115 motorshowever, they now send power through the new Liberty drivetrain and are powered by a completely redesigned, lighter battery system developed by Ford Performance and MLe Racecars. Power is sent to MLe Racecars' updated rear axle, which features improved PMR suspension geometry and larger Mickey Thompson tires for better starting grip.

Driving stability behind the start line is ensured by Ford Performance control software powered by AEM-EV components, with a new data acquisition system, dashboard and power distribution system, all developed by a team of engineers.

“Our changes have greatly improved the car, we have shed hundreds of pounds of weight and increased power to 1,800 horsepower,” explained Rushbrook.
