Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250: A Detailed Review of the New Generation
Return of the Legend: What's New in the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250...
ZYou know, there are moments in the automotive world when the release of a new model becomes a real event. The premiere of the new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250 was exactly such an event! After fifteen years – just think about it, a whole fifteen! – of waiting, the Japanese finally presented the successor to the legendary “one hundred and fifty”. And here’s what I’ll tell you – it was worth it!
Design: Two faces of one legend
You will probably be surprised, but Toyota did something that no one had dared to do before – it offered buyers a choice between two completely different “faces” of the car. And this is not just a marketing ploy – it is a real journey through time!
The first version, with round headlights (my personal favorite!), seemed to have been transported to us from the distant 1958. Remember that very first Land Cruiser? Massive, brutal, with characteristic round eyes-headlights... Now imagine its modern interpretation - it's just space!
The second option, with rectangular optics, refers us to the no less legendary Land Cruiser 60. And you know what? Both options are so good that it is really difficult to choose. It is especially impressive how the designers managed to preserve the recognizable silhouette of the Prado, while adding modern features - a new radiator grille, stylish LED headlights and stunning body geometry.
And also pay attention to practicality - black unpainted plastic around the perimeter of the body not only looks brutal, but also perfectly protects from scratches. Smart, right?
Dimensions: became larger, but did not lose maneuverability
The new Prado has grown noticeably – the length has increased to 4920 mm, the width to 2139 mm, and the wheelbase has stretched by as much as 60 mm! It would seem that such dimensions should make the car unwieldy... But no! Thanks to the well-thought-out geometry and excellent visibility, the new Prado remains surprisingly maneuverable both in the city and off-road.
By the way, if you want to personally evaluate how modern manufacturers work with the dimensions of large SUVs, I recommend taking a look at https://gac-izhevsk.ru – there you can compare the sizes of different premium SUV models in person and even take a test drive.
Under the hood: the revolution has happened!
Now hold on tight – Toyota has completely shaken up its engine range! I remember many fans of the brand saying: “Without an inline six, it’s not the same Kruzak.”
But you know what? I think the Japanese have done a fantastic job of modernizing:
- Hybrid installation iForce Max – a real breakthrough! 331 horsepower and a mind-blowing 630 Nm of torque. Yes, you heard right – a hybrid in the Prado! And this engineering miracle works simply fantastically. Acceleration is smooth but confident, fuel consumption pleases, and most importantly – there is enough traction always and everywhere.
- Turbo four T24A-FTS – for those who prefer classics in a modern version. 281 horsepower, instant response to gas, and what is especially nice – excellent economy. In my experience, this engine is more than enough for 90% owners.
- Diesel version – a real hard worker with character! 204 horsepower may not seem like a very impressive figure, but those 500 Nm of torque… Mmm, that’s where the real power is! It’s especially pleasing that in some markets the diesel will be available with a 48-volt hybrid system.
- Atmospheric 2.7 - for conservatives and those regions where ease of maintenance is important. Yes, 163 horsepower is modest, but the reliability and maintainability of this engine are time-tested.
Off-road talents: now even cooler
Do you know what I have always admired about Prado? Its ability to be both a comfortable city car and a real off-road conqueror. And in the new generation, this feature has not only been preserved – it has reached a completely new level!
Chassis:
- All-new double wishbone front suspension
- Reinforced twin-tube shock absorbers
- Solid rear axle on springs (a time-tested solution!)
- Improved weight distribution and increased body rigidity
Off-road arsenal:
- Ground clearance 221 mm (just try to find an obstacle that will stop it!)
- Four-wheel drive became even smarter thanks to new electronics
- Two locking differentials now work even more efficiently
- Front stabilizer disconnect system for better articulation
- "Creeping" cruise control mode in the base
- Improved Hill Descent Control
And now the most interesting part – geometry! The approach angle of 30°, departure angle of 22° and ramp angle of 25° make the new Prado one of the most capable SUVs in its class. For comparison – this is better than many competitors, including the new Defender!
Comfort: now on a new level
Inside, the new Prado is simply a holiday! Even the basic version has everything you need, and the top-end trim levels... That's where you can really feel like the king of the off-road!
Technological equipment:
- 12.3-inch multimedia screen – a real home theater on wheels
- JBL audio system with 14 speakers – a concert hall, no less!
- Head-up display – like something out of a futuristic movie
- "Transparent" hood - a miracle technology for difficult off-road conditions
- Digital rearview mirror – no blind spots!
- Wireless charging and powerful 2400W inverter
Practical solutions:
- Ventilated seats (a lifesaver on a hot day!)
- Smart climate control with improved filtration
- Third row of seats (folds into a flat floor – very convenient!)
- Thoughtful organization of space
- Improved noise insulation (you can finally have a quiet conversation on the road!)
- Increased trunk volume
Safety at Height:
- Latest generation Toyota Safety Sense
- Adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist
- Blind spot and cross traffic monitoring systems
- Automatic braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition
- Improved stabilization system for off-road mode
Prices and configurations: there is plenty to choose from
In the US, the base version will cost around $50,000 – not cheap, yes, but let's look at what the competition offers:
- Ford Bronco in comparable configuration – from 45,000$
- Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon – from 47 000$
- Land Rover Defender 110 – from 55 000$
And you know what? Given Toyota's legendary reliability and traditionally high residual values, the Prado looks very attractive!
First Edition Special Series
The welcome First Edition series deserves a separate discussion. Only 5,000 units, but what units! Special paint, unique trim elements, maximum equipment and, of course, those same round headlights in the style of the classic Land Cruiser. I am sure that these cars will become a collector's item!
Is it worth the wait?
Well, what can I say... If you've long dreamed of a real, serious SUV with modern stuffing - it's definitely worth it! The new Prado is the perfect balance between comfort, cross-country ability and reliability. And considering how long Toyota usually releases each generation, you can be sure that this car will remain relevant for a very long time.
P.S. And you know what? Looking at the new Prado, I understand – the times of real SUVs are not over. They just became much, much better! What do you think about the new generation? Share your thoughts in the comments – let's discuss!
Bonus for tuning lovers
And last but not least, Toyota has prepared more than 100 (!) different accessories for the new Prado. Here you have power bumpers, expedition racks, and additional protection... The list is simply huge! I was especially pleased with the presence of a factory snorkel and reinforced suspension - now you can assemble a real expedition vehicle directly at the dealer, while maintaining the warranty. Cool, right?
Update: Toyota has just announced a special training program for new Prado owners – professional instructors will teach how to use all the car’s capabilities to the maximum. In my opinion, it’s a great initiative!
