The BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which has set a new power record for BMW Group electric vehicles, is also another milestone for BMW M GmbH on its path to electric vehicles. The luxury limousine is the third electric sports model.
BMW i7 M70 xDrive debut at Auto Shanghai 2023
The BMW i7 M70 xDrive will be unveiled at the Auto Shanghai International Motor Show (April 18-27, 2023) in China. The entry into the global market will begin in the second half of 2023.
BMW's most powerful electric motor
The fifth generation BMW eDrive technology used in the BMW i7 is constantly being improved to increase power and efficiency. The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive features highly integrated drives on the front and rear axles, where the electric motor, power electronics and transmission are housed in a very compact overall package.
The M-specific principle of the electromagnetically excited synchronous machine gives the electric motor of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive on the rear axle, in particular, a very high power density. With a value of 2.41 kW/kg, this is the most powerful BMW electric motor to date.
This new record was achieved thanks to a patented BMW Group innovation that uses six field windings in the stator instead of the usual three. This allows the electric motor to generate very high power in a light and compact design and to continuously develop it to high speeds. In terms of power density as well as efficiency, it clearly outperforms the solution with two engines on the rear axle.
Maximum performance with M Sport Boost and M Launch Control
The engine on the rear axle develops a maximum power of 360 kW (489 hp). Precisely controlled interaction with a 190 kW (258 hp) electric motor on the front axle creates an electric all-wheel drive system with 1,015 Nm of system torque in Sport mode and a whopping 1,100 Nm with M Launch Control and M Sport Boost activated. As a result, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive transmission offers incredible flexibility.
With M Launch Control, torque control and traction control are integrated into the engine control unit. This provides a very accurate measurement of the power generated by the electric motors so that it can be converted into amazing performance without losing traction.
The M Sport Boost function is activated by the left shift paddle and is indicated by special M Performance graphics on the instrument cluster. This mode is also accompanied by the emotional M Performance-specific authentic sound of Hans Zimmer's standard BMW IconicSounds Electric feature.
High range, new MAX RANGE function
The extreme dynamics of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive are combined with a high ability to cover long distances. The energy content of the high-voltage battery located in the floor, 101.7 kWh, allows the BMW i7 M70 xDrive to drive from 488 to 560 km. The new MAX RANGE function allows for a range increase of approximately 15–25 % by appropriately limiting thrust power and top speed, as well as reducing comfort functions.
The advanced Combined Charging Unit software optimizes the charging efficiency and speed of the high voltage battery up to 22kW for AC charging as standard and up to 195kW for DC charging as standard. This allows you to increase the range to 170 km in 10 minutes at a powerful charging station.
M-specific suspension for optimum driving dynamics and comfort
The use of all control systems for electric all-wheel drive, steering, dampers and M-specific stability control combine typical M dynamics, agility and steering precision with high comfort over long distances. The standard suspension of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive includes adaptive air suspension on both axles with automatic leveling and electronically controlled dampers whose response is optimized by the M hydraulic system.
Standard equipment also includes Integrated Active Steering and the Executive Drive Pro Pack with active roll stability and active rolling comfort features. This is complemented by the M Sport braking system and 21-inch M light alloy wheels.
Individual charisma that testifies to outstanding results
Exclusive accents and technically oriented design elements typical of M, combined with an emphatically sporty driving style, set the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive apart from other models in the range. His individual charisma signals extraordinary dynamics and reveals his potential at a glance.
The centerpiece of the front design is a reinterpretation of the typical BMW round headlights and BMW kidney grille. The impressive appearance of the front end is emphasized by the contour illumination of the BMW radiator grille. In combination with the optional M Performance Package, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive can be combined for the first time with a high-gloss black kidney grille surround. In addition, on the side and rear of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive, M design elements such as the M exterior mirrors with distinctive twin legs, striking M side skirts and the model-specific rear apron with diffuser clearly express the sporty character of the top model. .
New varnishes in two shades, frost varnishes based on biomass
The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive offers a wide range of exterior finishes. Customers can also choose from over one hundred BMW Individual special paint finishes. A particularly extravagant look is provided by the two-tone BMW Individual paintwork, which can now also be used with the special BMW Individual paintwork. Among other things, a combination of colors is offered, such as BMW Individual Liquid Copper Metallic for the lower part of the body and Sapphire Black Metallic for the upper part.
The frost paints available for the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive are produced using an innovative process based on biomass rather than petroleum. The composition of the product has not changed, only the raw materials used are obtained from environmentally friendly sources.
Innovative features for luxurious travel comfort
Key elements that contribute to the top model's progressive luxury character and long-distance comfort include BMW's interactive cockpit panel and executive cabin with optimized rear seat tilt function. The extraordinary BMW movie screen and Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system make the rear seats feel like an exclusive private cinema on wheels. Advanced driving and parking automation systems optimize comfort and safety. For example, the parking and maneuvering assistant can now also be controlled via the My BMW app.
Additional automatic doors can be opened and closed both from the My BMW app and using the BMW Digital Key Plus function on your smartphone. The extended locking and unlocking function automatically opens the driver's door as soon as a smartphone with the individual BMW Digital Key Plus function approaches the vehicle. After entering, the driver's door can be closed, e.g. pressing the brake pedal.
Sporty style and maximum individualization in the interior
Typical M interior details underline the sporty character of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive. Its standard equipment includes eg. Illuminated M door sill finishers, M leather upholstery in Merino Black and Atlas Grey, M leather steering wheel, M indicators on the BMW curved display and M driver's footrest.
Optional equipment includes the BMW Individual interior and the BMW Individual interior with exclusive equipment in a total of nine color options. BMW Individual upholstery in Merino leather/cashmere wool with exclusive details is also available in Black/Dark Grey.
Updated BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect"
The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is one of the brand's first models to feature the latest generation of BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect" and the BMW 8.5 operating system. The updated display and operating system offer a new home screen and QuickSelect access, as well as an improved menu structure inspired by consumer electronics devices. BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect" is available in combination with BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
The start screen always shows the navigation map or other customizable displays. At the same level on the driver's side are vertically arranged function icons that can be selected with a swipe of a finger. Individual functions can be controlled directly via the "QuickSelect" access without having to enter a submenu.
The cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps now offers not only an expanded image in the information display behind the steering wheel, but also extended functions for even more precise planning with optimized charging. In combination with the BMW 8.5 operating system, the services and applications already available in the new BMW 7 Series are also available.
